Phase 1 Project update on the trail 70. The 72cc engine was fun and all, but I couldn’t really resist the siren call of the 140cc. It makes around 12hp vs the stock 5 hp, and it’s a 4 speed with a hand clutch vs a 3 speed semi auto. Oh yeah and there’s a new, considerably sillier exhaust.
Phase 2 is going to involve a disk brake front end that uses more modern dampened forks, some bmx style handle bars, new tires, powder coating the rims black, and the whole lighting and charging system setup. This thing is turning into a bit of a money pit, but I’m looking at it as a half price, retro grom rather than an expensive overbuild ct70. It’s all about perspective right?

About to start restoring my ‘71 CT90, and this is giving me bad ideas...

I bored out a 49cc to a 85cc in my z50 back in high school. Best decision I ever made at the time. You will have alot of fun with it!

What engine is this? There’s a strong chance it would fit in my ATC90, and I’ve already spent far too much money on it, so what’s more?

It would absolutely fit an atc90. It’s a piranha 140cc. It’s like 425 dollars shipped, and it’s a 12hp motor with a 4-up transmission and a manual clutch. It makes a trail 70 wanna wheelie through 2 gears leaned way forward over the bars and 3 gears sitting up. You should absolutely do it, but the rest of the bike needs to be able to handle it. Make sure it’ll stop and grip, Unlike the sketchfest I’ve got going on right now.

I just did a top end on mine so I’ll probably run that for a while, but I’m definitely going to look into it in the future. I’m doing a crazy chopper type build for a silly ATV poker run that my buddy and I go to. This year he wanted to take really small 3 wheelers instead of our regular quads and 3 wheelers, so I figured I’d have a little fun with it.
It still needs some finishing touches, but I love how it’s turning out. Next year I might do another full tear down and actually paint/powdercoat some stuff to make it look fully finished. Or I might just leave it ratty because it matches everything else I own, not sure yet.
As for being a sketchfest, It will always be one, it’s a 3 wheeler. It has no front brakes (but maybe I could fab some....) and a single drum in the rear, operated only by foot pedal.

I’d be curious to see if the headtube is similar to a ct70 because there’s a quite a few different front fork kits out there that convert a ct to modern dampened forks and a hydraulic disk brake, I wonder if you could adapt one.

I suspect that they’re really close at a minimum, this era of Honda used a lot of common parts, or interchangeable parts.
